“Arrival Nantucket, 1918”

By Russ Kramer
Oil on Canvas, 36″ x 21″

Order Limited Edition Print

Passengers aboard the ferry SANKATY arrive at Brant Point on a spring day in 1918 just as the old paddle steamer GAY HEAD is heading outbound. The steam launch MOLLY is pictured taking pleasure seekers to Tuckernuck, while the catboat DAUNTLESS is off to Wauwinet and a fishing schooner heads in with the day’s catch. In April of that year, the first seaplanes arrived to serve the island.

Russ Kramer writes: “Nantucket Harbor is surely one of the loveliest in the world, and unlike many others, today it still retains a profound sense of what came before. It is exciting to arrive by ferry past the Brant Point lighthouse, and I imagined what is must have been like decades before, seeing the same scene as one does today, virtually unchanged save for the vessels and the fashions.”

This painting is in private collection on Nantucket.
