The John Stobart Project – Chapter 11 – Finally Finished
The painting (above) as it was last touched by John and my finished version (below).
Finishing a John Stobart Painting
I was deeply honored to have been asked by John Stobart’s widow (and head of the Stobart Foundation) to finish a painting of South Street (at his request) he was unable to complete before his passing early this year. I will be regularly chronicling my progress finishing the piece using John’s notes, research, methods and materials in a series of blog posts, below:
I picked up this project again in April and was able to make a final push to the finish line. As you can see by looking closely at the finished image (above), I added final rigging, figures and details. The painting is also now in a frame (one from John’s collection) and the “tablet” or nameplate that came with the project affixed. John signed the unfinished work; below is a wonderful clip from “John Stobart’s Worldscapes” originlly on PBS showing him signing another.
I signed the canvas on the reverse side above the stretcher bar. It reads: “This original John Stobart painting was brought to near completion by him before his passing. It was finished, using his references, materials and techniques, and with his generous spirit looking over my shoulder, in the winter of 2024 by Russ Kramer”
And here is the finished product:
This painting is available for purchase and proceeds will be donated to The Stobart Foundation to further John’s mission of financially supporting young artists dedicated to traditional, representational art. For more information contact the Rehs Gallery (www.rehscgi.com)
