“YOUNG MISS and SPARTAN”

Two great Herreshoff designs — the 1902 Buzzard’s Bay 30 “YOUNG MISS” and the NY50 “SPARTAN” of 1913 mix it up during an Opera Cup off Nantucket’s Great Point Light.  24″ x 36″ oil on linen, 2025. This was a commission for “YOUNG MISS'” owner, who once also owned SPARTAN; he says she was so well balanced that he could take his hands off the tiller (as shown in the painting) on a fresh breeze and she would hold her point, ‘freight training.’
